Reflect - Reset - Recommit!
Welcome Muharram - New Hijri Year 1447
Alhamdulillah, we welcome Muharram 1447, the first month of the Islamic calendar. A sacred opportunity gifted to us by Allah to reflect, reset, and recommit to our journey towards Him Subhaan wa ta’ala. As Allah says in the Qur’an:
‘Indeed, the number of months ordained by Allah is twelve in Allah’s Record since the day He created the heavens and the earth of which four are sacred. That is the Right Way. So do not wrong one another during these months.’
[Surah At-Tawbah: 36]
Muharram is a gift from Allah, and these are the best days to plant the seeds of good deeds, knowing that Allah multiplies their reward many times over. But just as we strive to increase in worship, this is also our moment to let go of what holds us back. Let this month be the time we break free from harmful habits, leave behind sins that weigh on our souls, and take the first steps toward becoming the person Allah loves. Shaytan wants us to remain trapped in cycles of neglect, but Muharram calls us to rise above, to begin again, and to move closer to our Lord with sincerity and strength.
Muharram, known as the Month of Allah, holds a special place in our faith. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best fasting after Ramadan is the sacred month of Allah, Muharram.”
[Muslim]
Remember, the Prophet ﷺ said about fasting on Ashura: "Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive the sins of the year before it." [Muslim]
The scholars recommend pairing Ashura with fasting on either the 9th or the 11th of Muharram, to distinguish from the fasting of other nations.
You also have the weekly fasting of Monday and Thursday as well as the 3 white Days, giving us the chance to fast 8 consecutive days, Alhamdulillah.
Muharram is not only about fasting, it is a month of opportunity to renew your connection, leave behind what weighs you down, and pursue what pleases Allah. Let’s use this month to set goals that will carry us through the entire year. Engaging in more Qur’an, more charity, more kindness, and less of what displeases Allah.
Time to Set New Goals:
✅ Commit to fasting: Not just on Ashura (10th Muharram), but as much of the month as we can manage.
✅ Start (or strengthen) the habit of praying extra voluntary prayers.
✅ Reflect daily: What sin can I leave today? What good deed can I add?
✅ Rebuild relationships: Be the one who forgives and mends ties for Allah’s sake.
May Allah bless us in this sacred month, grant us sincerity in our intentions, and help us make this Hijri year 1447 a year of growth, forgiveness, and closeness to Him Subhaan wa ta’ala.
